Analysis of AGV Robots Automatic Obstacle Avoidance and Safe Operation Mechanism
One of the core advantages of AGV robots is their ability to achieve real-time obstacle avoidance and autonomous path planning through the use of lidar, multi-sensor fusion technology, and intelligent algorithms. They are now widely used in intelligent warehouses, industrial production, and other scenarios, significantly enhancing operational efficiency while ensuring maximum safety during operation.
With the rapid advancement of intelligent manufacturing, factories are increasingly demanding higher safety performance from automated equipment. AGV robots frequently move around in workshops and storage areas. Without reliable obstacle avoidance capabilities, they could disrupt normal production rhythms and cause equipment collisions or injuries to personnel. Therefore, automatic obstacle avoidance technology has long been a key indicator for evaluating the performance of AGV robots.

The obstacle avoidance capability of AGV robots relies on the coordinated operation of multiple sensors. Common core configurations include lidar, ultrasonic sensors, and visual cameras. Lidar continuously scans the surrounding environment to generate precise point cloud data, clearly identifying the specific location, distance, and contour of obstacles. Ultrasonic sensors are mainly responsible for short-range detection, effectively compensating for the detection blind spots of lidar and preventing close-range collisions. The visual system focuses on identifying dynamic targets, such as moving staff and forklifts. The real-time data collected by these sensors is quickly transmitted to the AGV control system, providing a precise basis for subsequent path adjustments.
In the context of intelligent warehouses, the environment is relatively complex, with densely arranged shelves and frequent personnel movement, which places higher demands on the obstacle avoidance response speed of AGV robots. During actual operation, AGV combines pre-built map modeling and real-time positioning technology to dynamically correct its trajectory on the preset path. Once an obstacle is detected ahead, the control system quickly judges through algorithms and flexibly takes measures such as deceleration, autonomous detouring, or emergency stopping to ensure safe operation.

In the application of industrial AGV on production lines, the obstacle avoidance logic focuses more on operational stability. The production rhythm in industrial settings is usually continuous and tight. If AGV frequently stop, it will directly affect the efficiency of the entire production line. Therefore, the system preplans multiple alternative paths and manages them through a unified dispatching system. When a certain route is blocked by an obstacle, the AGV can quickly switch to a backup route, minimizing the impact on production.
The special nature of obstacle avoidance for lift AGV mainly lies in their lifting operations. When these AGV perform lifting tasks, their center of gravity changes significantly, and the requirements for operational stability are more stringent. The control system not only needs to detect obstacles in front in real time but also fully consider factors such as braking distance and turning radius under load conditions to comprehensively ensure the safety of equipment, goods, and personnel during transportation. In intelligent warehouses, lift AGV are often used for shelf transportation, and the accuracy of their obstacle avoidance directly affects the integrity of goods and equipment.
At the algorithm level, AGV robots generally adopt a combination of "path planning + dynamic obstacle avoidance". In static environments, the optimal path is designed through prebuilt mapping; in dynamic environments (such as temporary passage of personnel or temporary occupation of equipment), the real-time data collected by sensors is used to dynamically adjust the travel route. With the continuous development of artificial intelligence technology, some advanced AGV systems can also continuously optimize obstacle avoidance strategies by learning from historical operation data, making the operation of the equipment more intelligent and efficient.
It is precisely because of their reliable automatic obstacle avoidance capabilities that AGV robots can operate stably in complex working environments, helping enterprises reduce manual intervention and improve overall operational efficiency. Whether it is the material handling in intelligent warehouses or the material transfer on industrial production lines, the normal operation of industrial AGV and lift-type AGV cannot do without the support of the core technology of automatic obstacle avoidance. In the future, with the improvement of sensor accuracy and the iterative upgrade of algorithm technology, AGV robots will continue to make breakthroughs in safety and intelligence, further promoting the steady development of manufacturing towards unmanned and intelligent directions.
